单词quack有两个常见意思，一指“嘎嘎”（鸭叫声），是个拟声词，模仿鸭子的叫声；另一个指“庸医、江湖骗子”，是个缩略词，在16世纪时写作quacksalver，借自早期荷兰语。

quacksalver意思是“庸医”或“江湖医生”，这些江湖郎中在沿街叫卖药膏(salve)及“万应药”等假药时，大吹大擂的样子很像鸭子在嘎嘎叫(quack)，所以被形象地称为quacksalver。后来quacksalver被缩略为quack。
