在16世纪西班牙军队中，住在同一个房间内的战友称为camarada ，在法语里写作camarade，单词comrade就由此演变而来。这个词最开始来源于拉丁语camera，就表示“拱形房间”。

19世纪中期，社会主义革命在法国蓬勃发展，革命者希望用一个能够体现平等的词来代替以前所用的“先生”、“太太”、“小姐”等称谓，于是选择了comrade，中文译为“同志”，意思是“志同道合的人”。
